The rising awareness of the growing obesity rate in the U.S. is showing its impact on the eating habits of Americans. Recent market study sends a clear signal to the industry that the constantly on-the-go Americans are more than ever before willing to pay for convenience and availability of fresh produce. This paper describes how laser microperforations can address process flexibility by altering the size and density of the microholes and providing packaging film specifically useful for given product items. In applications where there is limited packaging surface area for gas transmission, such as in plastic containers with a lid made from flexible film, microperforation could be the only alternative.
