Recently, a new type of lightweight cargo container has been developed, the Cargobox. It is a re-usable, collapsible conveyance unit dedicated to safe and secure, DOOR-TO-DOOR transport of air cargo. Crucial element in the Cargobox design is a closing strip, the Lockbar, which, enabled by Active Tag RFID Technology, provides safety and security for the Cargobox’ content during the entire journey from shipper to consignee. A supporting IT System will provide real time tracking and tracing services, available via Internet. The Cargobox, after being closed and locked at its loading site, (i.e. the shipper’s warehouse) can only be opened at designated locations, using a per container movement generated Security Code. Besides security enhancements such as prevention of losses due to pilferage, general application of the Cargobox and its IT System will result in substantial overall cost reductions, efficiency improvements and simplification of handling procedures. This White Paper summarizes the benefits of the Cargobox System and describes a Pilot Project to determine the value of the anticipated advantages for all parties in the global supply chain.
