Synopsis
The focus of this paper is to provide information concerning the significance of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure on the quality of consumer products packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Our goal is to assist brand owners, PET container producers, and PET resin suppliers in further understanding the role that UV absorbers can play in the mix of variables involved in the product formulation and package development process.

Following a brief overview of the relationship between light exposure and product shelf-life, we will provide specific information on recent studies that Milliken Chemical has conducted to quantify the effect of UV light of various wavelengths on specific formulation ingredients in PET. Finally, we will discuss the value implications for members of the PET container supply chain who choose to incorporate UV absorbing additives into PET packaging for appropriate applications.
